Trim the Fat from Your Holiday - Dieting Tips For Thanksgiving
Written by Dieting Diva on November 21, 2008 – 10:50 pm -Great tips from Gloria Tsang on how to cut calories from that holiday feast - in Robust Cooking. Here are a few of her tips:
- Potatoes: Use buttermilk and light butter in the mashed potatoes (you'll save about 140 calories).
- Pies: Use Cool Whip Free instead of whipped cream and save 90 calories per serving.
- Turkey: Avoid eating any of the turkey skin and knock off another 50 calories.
That's almost 400 calories right there, but I bet you can come up with a few other ways to cut back. Don't dread the day, have a great time - just don't wear the feast for the next few weeks.
Until next time,
B.J.

And You Thought Abs Were All About Sex Appeal
Written by Dieting Diva on September 29, 2008 – 12:53 pm -A new study about the link between a large abdomen and the risk for developing Alzheimer has just been released showing those who had a more rotund, apple shape during their middle age were anywhere from 81% to 243% more likely to develop this deadly and frightening disease.
The study of 6,583 men and women between 40 and 45 had the distance from their back and their upper abdomen measured during their regular checkup. They followed up with these same folks some 35 years later and found those with the larger distance were more likely to develop Alzheimer.
Now this was not your regular ‘over all’ weight retention. We've known for some time those who carry extra weight are more likely to develop all sorts of diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer. This study was specific to abdominal girth and the risk for Alzheimer.
And because those with larger abdomens are also more likely to have or develop diabetes, researchers believe the added insulin levels may be the explanation for both scenarios.
Just another reason to watch our weight, our waists and the glycemic index of the foods we eat.
Until next time,
B.J.
